One of the more frustrating aspects of the early game in Elden Ring is trying to make your way through dark caves. There are several dark caves in the starting region of Limgrave and players have no real way of providing light to it. Of course, this can change with a simple purchase of a light source from a merchant in the Lands Between.
There are several ways to light up caves in Elden Ring. However, a couple of these options aren’t ideal, as they don’t persist if you die. So, if you light up a cave using these items and then die, you would have to use them again. This costs precious materials and it’s easier to buy a permanent item to ensure you never have to deal with darkness again.

Lighting up caves in Elden Ring
The first and cheapest option that you have at your disposal is a simple Torch. This can be purchased from Kale the Merchant for a measly 200 Runes. Kale is the merchant found around 100 yards away from the starting spawn point in Limgrave. He’s found at the Church of Elleh inside of its ruins.
The problem with the Torch, though, is that it must be equipped to an armament slot. This adds some carrying weight and doesn’t let you carry a weapon or shield. To alleviate that problem, you should buy a Lantern. This is found at the Isolated Merchant’s Shack in the far west of Weeping Peninsula.
The Lantern can be equipped to your Pouch as a consumable and can be used an infinite amount of times. However, it does cost 1,800 Runes, so it’s not the cheapest item in Elden Ring. Still, it’s worth the purchase for lighting up caves in Elden Ring.
