aOver five years after its original announcement, Ubisoft’s pirate open world game Skull and Bones finally has a release date. Ubisoft presented an all-new gameplay trailer for the title earlier today, showcasing the beginning of the story as well as key mechanics and features. At the end of the trailer, Ubisoft revealed that Skull and Bones’ release date is set for Nov. 8, 2022 — at least for now. Fans should be cautious of getting their hopes up too much for the current launch date, as much can change between now and November; Ubisoft has not been afraid to delay launch dates before, and Skull and Bones has already been delayed a few times.
However, as of right now, fans can expect the game to release at the beginning of November. The release date is intriguing, especially after Sony Santa Monica revealed that God of War Ragnarok will release on Nov. 9. Two AAA titles releasing at the same time usually means that one of them suffers in terms of sales and popularity. While God of War is certainly the bigger title, it is only available on PlayStation, while Skull and Bones will launch on consoles and PC. This could give Ubisoft’s title an advantage, but it would need to be something special to outsell a fan favorite like God of War.
The new seven-minute gameplay trailer for Skull and Bones was certainly promising, though; the graphics looked solid and the systems in place seemed coherent. Also of note was a Pirate’s Den being on land, as many previously thought that the game would only take place on the high seas. Players can meet with friends, pick up NPC contracts, sell loot, craft ships, and more at the Pirate’s Den. Character customization was also a highlight; the trailer also showed that players will be able to change their character’s entire look.
Of course, the open-water combat was also on full display. Nothing looks to have changed much from older gameplay trailers, but the combat does seem more refined. Players have access to cannons and other weapons to take down or board an enemy’s ship.
Finally, the story for Skull and Bones was also slightly revealed. Players start as a low-level pirate on St. Anne island and they must work their way up to become the most infamous pirate on the sea. Time will tell if Skull and Bones can live up to the hype or not.
