Sergen “Broken Blade” Çelik will sign with G2 Esports as their top laner ahead of the 2022 season, sources told Upcomer on Wednesday. The deal will last through the end of 2024.
Broken Blade has been playing professionally for six years, most recently as top lane for FC Schalke 04 Esports, who sold their League of Legends European Championship slot to Team BDS this offseason. Before Schalke, Broken Blade was in North America on TSM for two years, and he played in Turkey, his home region, for Royal Bandits (now Royal Youth) among others.
On Schalke, Broken Blade helped the team place fourth in spring, both in the regular season and in playoffs. However, the team fell to 10th place in their last split this past summer after selling their mid laner, Felix “Abbedagge” Braun, to 100 Thieves. It was a historic low for the organization.
Despite the last-place finish this summer, Broken Blade has a solid reputation as a top laner and teammate. He was well loved in Turkey and brought his fans over to TSM, where he grew into himself as a character and brand beyond his play.
G2 Esports, his new team, had a rough year as well. Though they didn’t finish 10th, the team missed the League of Legends World Championship for the first time ever, having attended each previous Worlds since their formation in 2016.
G2 Esports revealed early October that they were looking to trade a few of their players and staff after their unfortunate season, and Martin “Wunder” Hansen was included in that announcement. It was recently reported that G2 transferred Wunder to Fnatic, leaving the spot open for Broken Blade.
That transfer to Fnatic follows another report that G2 had collaborated with Cloud9 to keep another former G2 Esports player, Luka “Perkz” Perković, off of Fnatic for at least three years.
G2 still have not yet finalized their roster, but their former bot laner, Martin “Rekkles” Larsson, was signed by French team, Karmine Corp, earlier this week.
