Over the weekend, Niantic announced that Pokémon GO players are guaranteed a shiny Jirachi. But there’s a catch. Here’s how to get your shiny Jirachi.
Jirachi, the wish Pokémon
Jirachi first appeared in Pokémon GO in 2019 during the GO Fest when players were given a series of quests to complete. This cute Steel-Psychic Pokémon was available to all players who completed the quest. The quest was free and it only took a matter of hours to complete the three relatively easy steps. Jirachi was not released into the game as a shiny, but players could at least capture the mon and add it to their PokeDex.
Now, trainers are given the chance to capture the shiny version of Jirachi. But it’ll cost you.
How to get shiny Jirachi
Niantic released a post via the Pokémon GO app titled “Wishes can come true – just ask Jirachi!”
More like “Wishes can come true – just pay for it.” Trainers wanting to encounter this shiny legendary Pokémon will have to pay for it. Starting February 20, 2023, during the Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn – Global, a new ticket will be available. The Masterwork Research ticket will grant trainers “across the world” and access to “encounter Shiny Jirachi” Niantic said in the post.
The Masterwork Research Ticket can be purchased for $4.99 USD directly from the in-game shop. Tickets will be available from February 20, 10am PST to March 20, 10am PST. Once trainers have purchased the ticket, the Masterwork Research will become available. Complete the research tasks to encounter shiny Jirachi.
As part of the Global Tour, players can also purchase tickets to an exclusive two day in-person event. The event will take place in Las Vegas February 18-19. Head to the Pokémon GO Tour website to purchase your ticket.
But what if I don’t want to pay?
Since the introduction of paid in-game events, Pokémon GO has exploded with hundreds of ticketed events, exclusive items, and more. This is now the third year, celebrating Pokémon GO tours. Whilst this one centers on the Hoenn region — like previous events — fans can expect plenty of in-game fun even without paying.
Throughout the event, players who haven’t paid for the ticket will still encounter lots of surprises. Niantic have announced via the in-game blog, that “for the first time in Pokémon GO, all Trainers will be able to encounter Shiny Unown H, Shiny Surskit, Shiny Gulpin, Shiny Torkoal, Shiny Cacnea, Shiny Tropius, and Shiny Relicanth — if they’re lucky!”
So don’t despair if you can’t afford the ticket, there’s still lots of shiny hunting to be done. As with previous in-game events, whilst trainers have to pay to encounter Shiny Jirachi during the event, we can expect Shiny Jirachi to be available to all trainers at a later date.
Players can also encounter new shinies in eggs as well as plenty of fan favorites returning to raids. The Pokémon GO Tour, Hoenn Global will also have research available to all trainers. The Special Research: Chasing Legends will be available to all trainers. We’re not sure what you’ll encounter in this research, but you can bet it will probably be well worth the effort.
