After losing to Team SoloMid on Sunday, Golden Guardians officially went 0-2 during Week 6 of the North American League of Legends Championship Series. GG’s playoffs hopes slip further and further away as the inexorable approach towards the offseason continues.
TSM came into the game with something to prove as both Jonathan “Chime” Pomponio and Colin “Solo” Earnest have history with GG. The match win firmly belonged to Chime, who had voice a personal stake in beating his former team. Chime locked his former one-trick and namesake, Bard. The TSM support used Bard’s ultimate to devastating effect and create opportunities throughout the game.
For their part, the mistakes Golden Guardians made during the match were rife throughout their Week 6 games.
“It was a very disappointing game, to be completely honest,” GG mid laner Nicholas Antonio “Ablazeolive” Abbott said in an interview. “We made uncharacteristic mistakes that cost us the game.”
Golden Guardians suffer an 0-2 Week 6
GG also lost to Counter Logic Gaming on Saturday. CLG and TSM are teams that occupy the middle-of-the-pack section of the NA LCS alongside Golden Guardians. Both are teams that GG need to beat, or at least have highly competitive matches against.
“I’m not sure exactly what part of the puzzle was missing for us this weekend, but we had made mistakes that we shouldn’t be making,” Ablazeolive said. “And it resulted in very obvious blunders that there’s not really much to learn from because we’d already fixed it.”
Some will point to the addition of jungler Kim “River” Dong-woo in place of Milo “Pridestalker” Wehnes as a factor behind Golden Guardian’s abysmal Week 6. Ablazeolive said that bringing in River was not what led to the losses.
“I don’t think he can be blamed for our team’s performance any more than anyone else can,” he said. “I don’t think we had any issues integrating River at first … our scrims this week were actually pretty good, but clearly something went wrong.”
While the blame may not lie with River, the team is still adjusting to the Korean jungler’s play style. Ablazeolive characterized River as a more team-oriented player than Pridestalker, who usually focused on farming and building up his own gold lead.
Either way, Golden Guardians will need to figure out what went wrong quickly. The team has a difficult road ahead of them if they still want to qualify for playoffs.
“Well we’re going to have to play better than today, that’s for sure,” Ablazeolive said. “And probably the most thing is just to implement what we practiced into game day. Cause that’s not what happened this week.”
