The LA Thieves have accomplished a rare feat at CDL Major IV, securing a clean sweep over the Toronto Ultra. Fans might not have expected a hot 3-0 to come in round two of the winner’s bracket, but that’s simply a testament to Vanguard’s unpredictability. LA continue to gain momentum at Major IV after they were coming off a terrific 3-1 win over Atlanta FaZe on Thursday. While Toronto also had some momentum entering the match following a win over the number-one seed Royal Ravens, that has pretty much evaporated with today’s loss to LA.
Toronto now drops to the loser’s bracket and will face OpTic Texas to move on to Sunday. The Thieves, on the other hand, advance to the winner’s finals and plays the winner of Florida and NYSL.
Toronto flounders in loss to LA Thieves
With how competitive Major IV has been, it’s a shock to the system to see a 3-0 sweep in the bracket. The LA Thieves were simply the better team in this match, though. It all started with a hotly contested Hardpoint on Tuscan. After a series of blows through two rotations, the score was essentially tied and the Ultra were holding down P1 for the win. However, then the SMG duo of Kenny “Kenny” Williams and Dylan “Envoy” Hannon went to work. The pair evaporated Toronto off of the hill and set themselves up for a clean finish to the map. Both Kenny and Envoy finished with 32+ kills on Tuscan.

The next map, Berlin Search and Destroy, was a complete blowout; even though Berlin is typically Toronto’s best S&D map, the Thieves utterly dominated, winning in 6-0 fashion. Each member of LA finished with six kills, while Ben “Bance” Bance and Cameron “Cammy” McKilligan of the Ultra combined for one kill.
The series stayed on Berlin for Control in map three and, once again, Toronto didn’t win a round. LA won in 3-0 fashion and this time it was Sam “Octane” Larew’s turn to go off for the Thieves. Octane dominated with the Automaton on Berlin, not allowing Toronto to get anything going on defense or offense. Envoy finished this series with an astounding 1.57 KD for the LA Thieves while Bance was abysmal for Toronto, finishing at a 0.68 KD. It was clear who the better SMG player was during this series.
The LA Thieves now move on to Sunday, while Toronto will fight for their Major IV lives later tonight against OpTic Texas.
