Square Enix has released a demo of the newest Final Fantasy installment. Final Fantasy 16 (FFXVI) is set to release on the 22nd of this month. That’s right, there’s only a few weeks until FFXIV hits the stores, and your consoles. Players around the world can’t wait to dive into the land of Valisthea. If you can’t wait—even for a few weeks—you can play the demo in the lead up to the game’s release.

What is the FFXVI demo?

Some studios have a habit of launching demo versions of a game before the full launch date. In fact, I was going through some old CDs (yes they are still a thing) and I even found a demo of the original World of Warcraft. Square Enix has also released demos of Kingdom Hearts games in the past.

The Final Fantasy 16 demo is a way for players to immerse themselves into the world of FFXVI and become familiar with the characters. Naoki Yoshida announced during the Final Fantasy XIV Pre-Launch Celebration stream that the demo game would be available for free for all players.

How long is the demo?

The Final Fantasy XVI demo includes two full hours of gameplay and content. The demo isn’t just a chance for players to experience the world of Valisthea. In addition to getting familiar with the combat and game style, the demo is the full opening two hours of the FFXVI game. The Square Enix team showed off the demo during the Final Fantasy XVI Demo Launch. It reveals the opening gameplay for FFXVI where players are introduced to Clive.

The demo will walk players through cinematics, mechanics, combat, and sets the scene for the Final Fantasy 16.

Once players have played through the opening section of the story, an additional game mode will unlock. It’s called the “Eikonic Challenge,” and it was made especially for the demo.

How to play the demo: Will my save data carry over?

To play the demo, head to the PlayStation Store and search for “Final Fantasy XVI demo”. Once you’ve found the demo you can add it to your library. You can do this on both a web browser and via the Store on your console. You’ll need to have a PlayStation 5 in order to play.

If you play the demo, your save data will carry over to the full version of the game if you choose to purchase it. The special Eikonic Challenge mode however does not allow players to save or load game data for this challenge.
