G2 Esports have beaten Heroic in the PGL Major semi finals to advance to the grand finals on Sunday. The best of three match went the distance with close games before the international roster could separate themselves from the Danes.
The first map was Nuke, Heroic’s pick. It went 16-12 in their favor. Mirage was slightly more lopsided ending 16-10 for G2. Inferno, the map notorious for tight battles at the end of best of threes or fives, looked like it may go easily to G2. A late rally from Heroic was enough to bring the game all the way to overtime, but that’s as far as the Danes could go. Overtime went to G2 and the finals score was 19-15.
Nikola “NiKo” Kovač played up to a superstar level, showing why he’s one of the highest rated players in all of Counter-Strike. He managed a whopping 81 kills with a 1.48 HLTV 2.0 rating over the course of the three maps.
G2 began their PGL Major run in the Legends stage. They kept their first three matches absolutely flawless achieving a 3-0 match record to reach playoffs with wins over the Copenhagen Flames, FaZe Clan and Entropiq. In the New Champions stage playoffs, G2 continued their flawless progression with a 2-0 win against Ninjas in Pyjamas.
Heroic began their PGL Major in the Challengers stage, where things got dicey. They eventually qualified with a 3-2 match record and a decisive win over Movistar Riders. The Legends stage went smoothly after an initial loss to Natus Vincere, with consecutive wins over Team Vitality, Astralis and the Copenhagen Flames. Yesterday, Heroic took a 2-1 victory over Virtus.pro to advance to the semis.
The grand finals of the PGL Major take place Sunday. G2 will play the winner of the other semi finals between Na’Vi and Gambit Esports at 3:00 p.m. E.T this afternoon.
