What are trade codes

Every Pokémon game has two versions. For this generation, it’s Scarlet and Violet. Each version comes with its own exclusive Pokémon, and while some players choose to buy both games to complete their Pokédex, you can use trade codes to get them instead.

This will thankfully save you the cost of a second game, while still allowing you to catch them all.

How to use trade codes

Using trade codes in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is pretty straightforward. Simply:

  1. Press ‘X’ to open the main menu in Pokémon Scarlet or Violet.
  2. Select ‘Poké Portal.’
  3. Select ‘Link Trade’ from the menu on the left side.
  4. Select ‘Set Link Code.’
  5. Enter the trade code you want to use.
  6. Select ‘Begin Searching.’
  7. When connected with another player, you can then agree to the trade.

Unfortunately, you’re matched up with random players from around the world, so you may end up with an unfavorable trade you don’t want to execute. If that happens, just decline the trade, and keep trying until you find an acceptable one.
