Over the past couple of weeks, there has been some discussion in the Call of Duty League community about what the third game mode will be for the 2022-23 season. For the past two years, we’ve had Control as that game mode. However, Infinity Ward has been reluctant to include Control in their games, so many players ruled out that possibility when Modern Warfare 2 was announced. Some players thought it might be Domination after the game mode “CDL Domination” was located in the MW2 beta’s files; that was quickly debunked by CDL GM Daniel Tsay after players discovered it. With those two modes ruled out, there’s only one additional possibility: Capture the Flag.

Capture the Flag was a mainstay mode in the competitive Call of Duty scene for several years. It last made an appearance as a competitive mode in Call of Duty: WWII. Since then, we’ve seen both Control and Domination take the reigns as the third mode alongside Hardpoint and Search and Destroy (both played twice in a best-of-five series). Now, it seems CTF will return to the scene, at least according to OpTic Texas player Anthony “Shotzzy” Cuevas-Castro.

On a recent Twitch stream, Shotzzy spilled the beans on CTF. Whether he was supposed to reveal this information is unclear, but nevertheless, it’s out there now.

Fellow streamer Tommy “ZooMaa” Paparatto asked Shotzzy and company what they thought the third game mode will be in MW2. Seth “Scump” Abner didn’t seem to know and Anthony “Methodz” Zinni guessed Control. Then, Shotzzy popped in and stated “I heard it’s going to be Capture the Flag.”

As the tweet above points out, data miners discovered CTF in the game files for MW2 months ago. It’s also been teased in promotional screenshots, like the one featured in this article. Given all of that, plus the fact that Control has not been sighted in the game files yet, and it appears CTF will make its way back into the competitive game mode rotation for the 2022-23 CDL season.

Of course, nothing is official yet and things can still change. What is official is the schedule for the 2022-23 CDL season, which was announced last week.
