British Smash tournament Tea Party 2: Mayoral Madness is facing potential cancellation following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, tournament organizer Tom “G-P” Scott said in a tweet prior to the queen’s death on Thursday.

In his initial tweet, G-P claimed that he would legally have to cancel the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate regional if the government officially announced the queen’s death before 5 a.m. ET on Saturday. G-P had scheduled Tea Party 2 for this Saturday and Sunday.
G-P assured registrants that he would contact them and offer refunds if he had to cancel the tournament. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth later in the day, G-P said he would provide an update on the status of his Smash tournament on Friday morning.
Operation London Bridge impacts Smash tourney
The potential cancellation of G-P’s Smash tournament relates to Operation London Bridge, a detailed plan for the sequence of events that would take place after Queen Elizabeth died. Operation London Bridge — which has existed in some form since the 1960s and had several details leaked in advance — included arrangements for the announcement of the queen’s death and many other events leading up to her funeral in 10 days.
While Operation London Bridge has provided clear instructions for British government officials, the effect on private entities is less clear. A national day of mourning is already scheduled for the day of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, during which banks will close. However, the British government has not yet revealed if it will prohibit non-essential businesses from operating on that day or in the days leading up to it.
“I’ve been told we MIGHT get away with it, but we won’t know for sure until after passing,” G-P tweeted prior to the queen’s death. “All we can do for now is wait, and prepare for the worst.”
Many American Smashers have poked fun at G-P’s predicament and the concept of Operation London Bridge as a whole. Brolin “Catalyst” M. called the United Kingdom a “Mickey Mouse country,” while Andrew “PracticalTAS” Nestico joked that Tea Party 2 could be the first Smash tournament “in over 70 years” to face cancellation due to the death of a monarch.
