Although the first eight generations included over 900 Pokémon, several combinations of unused Pokémon types still remain. In fact, of the 18 Pokémon types, only three have been paired with every type at least once: Flying, Water, and Psychic. That said, many others have joined up with all but one or two other types.
As Pokémon Scarlet and Violet approach, the series is poised to surpass the 1,000 Pokémon mark — a huge milestone for the franchise. Undoubtedly, the games will introduce new type combinations that the series has never experienced before. Until then, here are all of the Pokémon types that currently remain unused.
Unused Pokémon types with Normal
Although Normal is one of the most abundant types in the Pokémon universe, it is fairly uncommon that it is paired with a type other than Flying. For this reason, it is unsurprising that Normal has been paired with fewer types than any other Pokémon type.
At the moment, there are still five type combinations featuring Normal that have yet to make an appearance. They are as follows:
However, The Pokémon Company has already confirmed that Grafaiai will become the first Poison/Normal-type when Scarlet and Violet launch. As a result, it is possible that other unused Pokémon types will debut in the near future. Fans can expect more information about the full Generation 9 Pokédex closer to the games’ release date in November.
Meet Grafaiai, the Poison/Normal Pokémon!
This Pokémon specializes in using its poisonous saliva—which changes color depending on what the Pokémon eats—to attack foes by spitting at them or by slashing at them after coating its claws with the saliva. 😬#PokemonScarletViolet pic.twitter.com/BZmrZTGoZr

Other never-before-seen combinations
Beyond these five combinations, there are another 11 unused Pokémon types. The following type combinations have still yet to appear on an official Pokémon:
In addition, there are a handful of rarely-seen combinations that Game Freak has only used for Legendary Pokémon, Mega Evolutions, or other kinds of alternate forms. However, the 16 type combinations listed above are the only ones that remain completely unused.
