Eevee is one of the cutest Pokémon in the entire franchise. This generation one fox-like mon has been a fan favorite for years, and was available in Pokémon GO from launch. As an evolution Pokémon, Eevee has several evolutions, affectionally known as “Eevelutions”. Luckily for players, all Eevee’s evolved forms are now available in Pokémon GO. Here’s how to get them all.
All Eevelutions available
Eevee has eight evolutions in total, covering eight different types. Each of Eevee’s evolved forms is a single type only. There’s:
- Flareon, a Fire-type Pokémon
- Jolteon, an Electric-type Pokémon
- Vaporeon, a Water-type Pokémon
- Espeon, a Psychic-type Pokémon
- Umberon, a Dark-type Pokémon
- Leafon, a Grass-type Pokémon
- Glaceon, an Ice-type Pokémon
- Sylveon, a Fairy-type Pokémon
The original three – Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon – form part of the Kanto PokéDex; they were released into Pokémon GO on day one along with Eevee. Other evolutions have slowly been added over the years. But how does one evolve Eevee in Pokémon GO? Pokémon GO requires trainers to use candies to evolve their mons. If you’ve played any of the traditional Pokémon games on Nintendo, then you’ll remember Eeveelutions usually require the use of stones, visiting special areas, or levelling up friendship.
How to get each Eeveelution
The originals – Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon
Let’s start with the easy ones, the OGs – Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon. Unlike the Nintendo games, there’s no leaf, fire, and electric stones in Pokémon GO. You can get these mons in a similar way to many others in Pokémon GO – with candy. If you want one of these original evolutions, select an Eevee from your Pokémon Storage and click “Evolve”. You’ll notice this costs 25 candies and there’s a “?” on the Evolve button. This means Eevee will randomly evolve into either Flareon, Jolteon, or Vaporeon. Make sure you have plenty of Eevees on hand if you haven’t added a specific Eevelution to your Pokédex. It can take a few goes to get the one you want!
Espeon and Umbreon
Released in Generation two Pokédex, Espeon and Umbreon landed into Pokémon GO in 2017. In the Nintendo games you needed to wait until Eevee was a certain level, have good friendship, and evolve during the day. The same can be said for Umbreon, except you needed to evolve Eevee at night. These evolutions work similar in Pokémon GO. For this evolution to work, you’ll need to set Eevee as your buddy. Then, it’s time to start.
Walk 10km with Eevee, which should earn you two candies. Once you’ve walked 10km with Eevee you should be able to Evolve it. If you want the Psychic-type Espeon you’ll need to evolve during the day; if you want the Dark-type Umbreon, you’ll need to evolve at night. Just make sure that Eevee is still set as your buddy when you evolve it, otherwise you’ll lose the progress. You don’t want to see the look on someone’s face after walking 10km with a 100% IV Eevee, only to deselect it as a buddy and evolve — the feeling of horror as Eevee evolves into one of the original three is not something you want to experience!

Leafeon and Glaceon
Fans had to wait a little longer for Leafeon and Glaceon to appear in Pokémon GO. These fourth generation mons were released into the Pokémon GO in 2019. In the Nintendo games, players needed to evolve Eevee with stones or in certain locations to get Leafeon and Glaceon. Pokémon GO has attempted to mimic this by making trainers evolve Eevee while near Mossy or Glacial Lures. Players will find lures attached to PokéSpots. You can either add one yourself or journey to one that another player has added. To get Leafeon, you’ll need to be near a Mossy Lure and a Glacial Lure for Glaceon. Once you’re on top of these lures, the evolve button for Eevee will change to a include a lure icon and the outline of Leafeon/Glaceon.
This is probably one of the easier of the evolutions as you can buy lures from the in-game shop for 200 coins. Lures are also given as rewards, and many players have one or two stashed away in their bags. On event days or similar, there’s often a lot of these special lures attached to stops so you should have too much trouble finding one.
Sylveon
The long awaited Sylveon finally hit Pokémon GO in 2021. This sixth generation mon is one of the more coveted evolutions, being a Fairy-type. In the Nintendo games, you need high friendship or affection before Eevee would evolve into Sylveon — it’s no different in Pokémon GO. If you want to add Sylveon to your collection, you’ll need to invest some time. Eevee only needs 25 candy to evolve into Sylveon, but also needs 70 hearts as your buddy! Trainers will need to feed, stroke, play and battle with Eevee in order to rack up the number of hearts required. Once it has 70 hearts, the evolve icon will change to an outline of Sylveon. This is definitely one of the harder to get Eeveelutions, and there are no shortcuts; or are there?
Getting all the evolutions
If you’re planning getting all the Eeveelutions in Pokémon GO, then you’ll need a lot of Eevees. Even if you get the originals on the first go, you’ll need at least eight Eevees. However, if you can’t be bothered leveling up your Eevee’s friendship, finding lures, or waiting for the correct time of day, there’s also a trick.
Secrets to evolving Eevee in Pokémon GO
Luckily, some smart developer at Niantic thought of all the poor trainers wandering around with Eevees, or failing over and over to get the one they want. There’s a way to evolve Eevee from the comfort of your couch, and get the one you want. This is especially useful if you have a special (say 100 IV) Eevee you want to evolve into something specific. Whilst this reduces a lot of time for Eevee’s later generation evolutions, it ensures you get the exact original evolution you want.
Firstly, make sure you have plenty of candy, because each of these will cost 25 candies. But if you’ve collected lots of Eevees, you should have lots of candy. Now, before just randomly clicking on the evolve button, rename your Eevee. Giving it a special name will force it to evolve into a corresponding Eeveelution. Once you’ve renamed your Eevee, tap “Evolve” and it will evolve. Here are the evolved types and corresponding names:
- Vaporeon: rename Eevee to “Rainer”
- Jolteon: rename Eevee to “Sparky”
- Flareon: rename Eevee to “Pyro”
- Espeon: rename Eevee to “Sakura”
- Umbreon: rename Eevee to “Tamao”
- Leafeon: rename Eevee to “Linnea”
- Glaceon: rename Eevee to “Rea”
- Sylveon: rename Eevee to “Kira”
