The Shanghai Dragons are one of the first teams to reveal their new Overwatch League roster for 2019.

The Shanghai Dragons are hoping for more success with this roster, after the horrendous year they had in 2018. In fact, they now hold the record for most consecutive losses in a professional sport, standing at 40 losses in a row. Today also represents the day that the organization moves away from a full Chinese roster. As of now, the six new members they are adding are all Korean. The only remaining Chinese player on the Shanghai Dragons’ roster is Weida “Diya” Lu, one of the only bright spots of that 2018 team.
The team is adding three new DPS players in Min-seong “diem” Bae, Jin-hyeok “DDing” Yang and Yong-Jin “YOUNGJIN” Jin. Seong-hyeon “Luffy” Yang and Kyung-woo “CoMa” Son are joining as the new supports. Finally, Joon-hwan “GuardiaN” Cho is joining as the team’s new off-tank player. Shanghai Dragons are bringing a majority of the players from Korean teams, Kongdoo Panthera and Lucky Future Zenith.
Meet the Lineup!
As we said, a lot of the new members are coming from Kongdoo Panthera. Kongdoo Panthera would actually get to the Grand Finals of the Korean Overwatch Contenders in season two. However, they would fall to underdogs RunAway, but they were a force to be reckoned with throughout the season. Meanwhile, diem is coming from Lucky Future Zenith, a team that would join the Chinese Overwatch Contenders scene in season two. They would end up winning in that same season.
These players are joining the remaining Shanghai Dragons players, with Eui-Seok “Fearless” Lee, Weida “Diya” Lu and the first female Overwatch pro, Se-yeon “Geguri” Kim. Many say that these three players were the only silver lining from the 2018 Overwatch League season. Additionally, these three players would play pretty well for the Shanghai Dragons, which means that a few of the members will be substitutes.
New Look Shanghai Dragons
This provides the Shanghai Dragons a blank slate for this new season. The past is the past, and although they shouldn’t forget their 2018, they shouldn’t dwell on it. Learn from the past and become stronger as a result. As a new roster, there shouldn’t be much pressure on the new members to perform. At the same time, they literally cannot perform worse than their predecessors, so pressure is at an all-time low. With plenty of Kongdoo Panthera members on the squad, the synergy between members should be through the roof. Pairing this with a few members with Overwatch League experience should help the team settle into their new setting.
However, there are a few problems that could arise with the team. For example, there is a chance that this lineup flops, as they aren’t able to perform under the bright lights of the Overwatch League. This has a slim chance of happening though, as Kongdoo Panthera was one of the best Korean teams last season. They will hopefully bring the same fire they had in Korea, as they are playing under the same head coach, Seong-hwan “BlueHaS” We.
