In the summer, Seoul Dynasty would begin recruiting Overwatch players for Overwatch Contenders Korea. The team now confirms that they’ve locked their roster and coaching staff for Season Three.
In a press release, Lee Ji-hun, GM of Gen.G esports, would state, “We are pleased to officially announce our Contender’s team roster for Season 3. We have built a well-rounded team of players with great potential, despite being relatively unknown. They bring a high level of passion and enthusiasm, and we will help them to maximize their abilities to become one of the best teams in the league.” This should be a great venture for Seoul Dynasty, and for the Gen.G brand.
Meet the Roster!
The team consists of some lesser known players, such as their DPS duo, Ye “Agnes” Hyun-seo, and Jeong “Stalk3r” Hag-yong. Main tank Kim “LUKE” Hyun-jun, and main support Moon “LVLZ” Sung-min are also relatively unknown in the Overwatch scene. However, they do have Bang “Shubil” Min-joo, who was formerly on KongDoo Panthera. Rounding out the Gen.G roster is Kim ‘DNCE’ Se-yong, who would last play for Samsung MorningStars Blue.
The coaching staff is going to be led by head coach Lee Si-woo, who was an esports journalist beforehand. Joining him will be assistant coach Moon “MMA” Sung-won, who was a veteran StarCraft II player, and a legend of the scene. He has won multiple championships from his beginnings in 2011 to 2015, even winning a Premium tournament each year. This coaching staff should be interesting to watch, as this will be their first foray into the coaching scene. Arnold Hur, Gen.G’s Chief Growth Officer, says:
Our goal is to provide the top players in Korea with the training and preparation needed to go pro. For that reason, we expose them to coaching systems that resemble the way OWL teams play. So many factors come into play at the next level, which is why we provide English lessons, physical and psychological well-being programs, and PR & marketing training so players can be better equipped once they move up. Simply put, we’re not just trying to just build a Contenders team for Seoul Dynasty, Gen.G is looking to set the gold standard for how a minor league team should be run.
Planning for the Future
This move lets Seoul Dynasty cultivate talent in the best region on the planet. With a team to help grow their talent pool, they will be able to move players to their main roster with ease. As a result, there is only one team remaining from the Season One Overwatch League teams without an Academy team. The Los Angeles Valiant remain as the only team without a roster in the Overwatch Contenders league. It is an odd move, considering that a Contenders team has only brought good results for most of the organizations. Many players who play in the Overwatch Contenders are now heading into the Overwatch League. The amount of support and growth these players see within an organized system is amazing, and should also be a priority for teams as well.
