The first content update for Fortnite v5.0 is live today and introduces players to a new submachine gun. First teased in-game earlier this week, the news is now confirmed via Epic’s blog. The new SMG is available in Common, Uncommon, and Rare variants. It deals 19-21 base damage, and uses Light Ammo, like the other SMGs. It has a 30 round capacity.
Unfortunately for Battle Royale fans, there isn’t much else in this update. The Tactical Submachine gun is now in the vault, meaning it is unavailable for use in-game. Though vaulted items aren’t necessarily gone forever, it seems more likely in this instance. With the recent inclusion of the Drum Gun, there isn’t room in the weapon roster to justify the older Tactical SMGs. Meanwhile, Semi-Auto Sniper Rifles receive a slight boost to damage output, dealing 75/78 instead of 63/66.

However, there is exciting news for anyone who is interested in trying the game’s PvE mode, Save the World. Though Epic pledges this mode will be free at some point later this year, the Early Access price is half-off for a limited time. Ordinarily $40 USD for the standard Founder’s Pack, the game is now $19.99 until July 30. Lastly, the Typewriter Assault Rifle is available in the Weekly Store. Battle Royale players will recognize this weapon as the Drum Gun added to PvP a few weeks ago.
A mid-range assault weapon with a high capacity magazine and a lateral kick. Its shooting profile makes it ideal for clearing groups of nearby enemies in mobile engagements.
Though there isn’t much new coming in today’s update, it’s hardly surprising. Fortnite Season 5 launched last week with patch v5.0, and players are still adjusting to all the changes introduced with that update. Furthermore, given the publicity surrounding the Fortnite Summer Skirmish, especially in light of last week’s disastrous first competition, it makes sense for Epic to dial back the updates. The game’s competitive circuit needs to bounce back, and maintaining stability in-game is a priority. Hopefully, the upcoming week reflects further balance tweaks and server maintenance.
