London-based football club Arsenal FC has announced its Pro Evolution Soccer eFootball Pro League roster with team captain Christopher Maduro Morais from Portugal, Emiliano Spinelli from Germany, and Alexis Garaud from France. “We’re excited to be working with Arsenal FC, embracing esports culture and authentically entering into the space through EGL,” said Glen Elliott, Managing Director of EGL. “We’re looking forward to seeing what this team can do with the assistance EGL will be providing.”

The Esports Gaming League was in charge of building the roster, which included scouting prospective players, undergoing interviews, and signing contracts. The three players signed to Arsenal will compete in the second season of Konami’s eFootball League. This will consist of 3v3 co-op matches, starting in December of 2019 and continuing through July of 2020. The Premier League team’s esports roster will also compete in the 2020 FIFA and EA Sports ePremier League.

“It is a great honour to become an Arsenal player. As a lifelong supporter, this is something that I have dreamed of since I was a young boy and I am happy that years of work and sacrifice have paid off,” said Morais, the team captain, in an interview. “I am excited, along with my team-mates, to represent Arsenal as the club makes its first steps into eFootball. Come on you Gunners!”

This news follows a previous announcement by Danish esports organization Astralis that it would operate Italian football club Juventus’ esports venture. Astralis Group also has its own FIFA esports team named Future FC, in addition to its Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends teams.

The Pro Evolution Soccer eFootball Pro League also has participation from well-known football clubs like Barcelona, Schalke 04, AS Monaco, Celtic FC, Boavista FC, Manchester United, and more.
