DetonatioN FocusMe ended Day 1 of the 2021 League of Legends Worlds Championship with an even record, defeating Unicorns of Love and falling to Cloud9. The last time the League of Legends Japan League reps were in Iceland was at the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational. There, they defied the region’s disappointing reputation by challenging the likes of Cloud9 and DWG KIA and nearly escaping their group, despite playing with coach Suzuki “Kazu” Kazuta as a substitute.

With their ideal starting lineup (affectionately named the “LJL Exodia” by fans and analysts alike), both in good form and motivated to prove themselves, this may be the region’s best shot in years at competing on the international stage.

Upcomer caught up with DFM’s ace bot laner, resident gaming savant and former top-ranked Overwatch player, Sugiura “Yutapon” Yuta, at the end of the day to chat about his feelings on returning to Europe and how he gets good at whatever videogame he tries.

Pop culture consumer and League of Legends thought-haver. Working on becoming a weirder person.
