The League of Legends European Championship returns on January 14, 2022, for the Spring Split. After a season that saw MAD Lions lift both Spring and Summer trophies, the LEC will be back for another new chapter next year.

The 2022 season begins one week earlier than the previous season, leaving teams less time to finalize their rosters and begin preparations. With MAD winning both trophies in 2021, they remain the team to beat heading into the new Spring Split.
No fans in studio for 2022 LEC Spring Split?
From Riot Games’ statement, there was no mention of a return of fans back to the LEC studio. Given the persistent global pandemic and the recent delta variant, it is highly unlikely that fans will be allowed back anytime soon. Also, their emphasis on a better online experience indicates that fans will have to wait a bit longer to see their favorite players on stage again, in person.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Riot Games does not plan on having the usual LEC roadshow. Rather, it will focus more on improving the online viewing experience, as well as the virtual fan experience, for fans around the world. However, Riot will continue to monitor the coronavirus situation for the possibility of a roadshow in the Summer of 2022.
What’s new in the LEC
While there have been rumors during the offseason on player transfers, most teams are yet to confirm their rosters for the 2022 Spring Split. With G2 however, you can expect different coaching staff — and perhaps a different bot lane — from the previous season. Moreover, the 2022 LEC Spring Split will also welcome Team BDS to the league, after purchasing Schalke 04’s slot. The schedule for the Spring Split is yet to be revealed but looking back at all LEC Day 1 openers, fans can expect an action-packed matchup to kick things off.
