Legendary Chinese League of Legends team LGD Gaming has secured a spot in this year’s World Championship. They faced off against 2018 Worlds champions Invictus Gaming for Round two of the LPL’s Regional Qualifier. LPL teams Top Esports, JD Gaming, and Suning will also head to Worlds alongside LGD.

In a battle between both top teams, IG was no match for LGD Gaming. IG had only won one out of four games, allowing LGD to qualify as LPL’s fourth and final seed for Worlds.

The LPL casters announced LGD as winners for the first two games. They stretched out the second game to 52 minutes, a rare occurrence in pro League of Legends. Although IG dealt plenty of damage thanks to Song “Rookie” Eui-jin and Ding “Puff” Wang, it wasn’t enough to win against their rival. LGD ended the game with four Barons, pushing their way to IG’s Nexus and ending in a victory.

IG stepped up their game for the third match, earning all four drakes and pushing eight towers. The MVP for this game is IG’s South Korean top-laner Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok.
The last match proved how badly LGD wanted the win, as they finished in 28 minutes with a big gold difference. Rookie once again dealt the most damage, but LGD ended with the most kills.

LGD returns to Worlds
This will be the first time since 2017 LGD veterans mid-laner Su “xiye” Han-Wei and jungler Han “Peanut” Wang-ho return to the Worlds stage. The team’s success came as a surprise since they found themselves in 15th place for spring and 6th place in the summer. Knocking IG out from qualifying for Worlds was an unexpected turn in events.
Unfortunately, Invictus Gaming won’t be attending this year’s Worlds after participating in the previous two years. They hold the title as the 2018 champions and finished 4th place in 2019.
