Andrés “AndresFn” Fariñas won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at Battle of the Armada on May 3. Adam “Armada” Lindgren hosted the online tournament for European Smash Ultimate players and streamed the event on his Twitch channel.

AndresFn started the tournament by defeating Immanuel “imi” Geier and “Kire42”, as expected. After an upset over Ufuk “cyve” Fidan, he found himself in top 32 on winners side. He continued his winners run into top 8, beating Tarik Fayazi and Dennis “iStudying” Kwarteng along the way.

AndresFn finally dropped into the losers bracket after suffering a 0-3 loss to Mertcan “Snormanda” Irdem. However, after beating Jonas “Sirjon” Scharnetzki 3-0 and Javier “MVL” Ureña Marco 3-2, he rematched Snormanda in Losers Finals. This time, AndresFn pulled off the 3-0 to eliminate Snormanda. He dominantly overcame Marcel “quiK” Romagnuolo in Battle of the Armada Grands, winning set one 3-1 and set two 3-0.

Online Smash Ultimate has treated AndresFn well, as he outplaced many of Europe’s best at Battle of the Armada. However, he has not yet made the same kind of breakout offline. He has not performed well enough at in-person tournaments to appear on the European Smash Ranking. In fact, AndresFn is only ranked No. 14 in his home country of Spain.

Other results from Battle of the Armada

Snormanda placed 3rd at Battle of the Armada while playing as Bowser Jr., a character most consider a low tier. Impressively, he made it to Winners Finals without dropping any games. Along the way, Snormanda beat William “Glutonny” Belaid, Khang “Tru4” Tran, and AndresFn. However, he lost 0-3 to both quiK and AndresFn, meaning none of his sets went past game three.

MVL similarly scored some upsets on his way to 4th place at this event. He reached Winners Semis by defeating Robin “DarkThunder” Kurzke and Ramin “Mr.R” Delshad. In top 8, MVL earned an additional win over Cathal “holopup” Collins, a notorious Wi-fi Warrior from Ireland.

As is often the case at online tournaments, many of Europe’s best offline players underperformed at Battle of the Armada. Glutonny lost to Snormanda and Sirjon to place 13th, using a mix of Donkey Kong and Captain Falcon. Similarly, Mr.R placed 7th, losing to MVL and Sirjon. Conversely, Europe’s second-best Super Smash Bros. Ultimate player, quiK, placed a respectable 2nd at this event.
