Pedro “Prodigy” Alonso won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at Super Ascension in Chandler, Arizona on Dec. 15. This was a C-tier tournament and the final event of the Fall 2019 PGRU season.
Prodigy reached Winners Quarters with wins over players such as Asael “PiXL” Rivera. Then he advanced into top 8 on winners side after scoring an upset victory over Eric “Pandarian” Lund. He continued his streak in top 8 by defeating Alexis “Goblin” Stennett.
In Winners Finals, Prodigy faced off against Guillermo “Stroder” Martinez Jr., the No. 1 player in Arizona. Prodigy won the set 3-2. He defeated Stroder 3-2 again in Grand Finals, earning 1st place at Super Ascension. In doing so, Prodigy became the second Mario main to win a PGRU event, behind Rasheen “Dark Wizzy” Rose.

Prodigy also placed 1st in Doubles at Super Ascension, teaming with Antony “MuteAce” Hoo. The duo lost to Alex “Lucky” Rust & Benji “Loaf” Rust even before reaching top 8. However, Prodigy & MuteAce were able to make a strong losers run. They reached top 4 by eliminating PiXL & John “VaLoR” Toral and Pandarian & Troy “BassMage” Waters.
Their run continued with wins over Jonathan “CRUP!!” Achutegui & Abraham “Asotil” Achutegui and Stroder & Spencer “BestNess” Garner. In Grand Finals, Prodigy & MuteAce faced off against Goblin & Raj “Silver” Nadiger. After two five-game sets, Prodigy & MuteAce emerged as the Super Ascension Doubles champions.

Stroder had a solid run to 2nd in Smash Ultimate Singles at Super Ascension. He reached top 8 by defeating Devon “JumboJack” Carter, VaLoR, and BestNess. Then in top 8, he earned two wins over Dawson “Big D” Perron while also losing two sets to Prodigy.
Big D had an impressive run to 3rd place using Ice Climbers, a largely underrepresented character. In the process, he earned a handful of impressive upsets. Big D was able to defeat MuteAce, Pandarian, and Goblin.
