With the Modern Warfare beta over, we can now look towards the full release of the game. The two beta weekends provided Infinity Ward with a multitude of data and knowledge to help improve their game for launch. However, even though a majority of bugs are being fixed, there is still a major issue with Modern Warfare that could hinder its playability.

The main issue with Modern Warfare’s multiplayer

Though this can be boiled down to a single issue, it creates multiple problems. If you played the beta at all, there’s no doubt you noticed the non-traditional mini-map. Infinity Ward’s version doesn’t display enemy fire as red dots when there isn’t a UAV active.

While this is a step-up from having no mini-map at all, it still isn’t enough. The mini-map in Call of Duty is one of the few aspects that didn’t need tinkering with. However, the developers tried to go a more realistic route this year in traditional multiplayer modes.

Modern Warfare mini-map

As we all know, this idea quickly fizzled out, as #TeamMiniMap was trending worldwide on Twitter on the first day of the beta. While a lesser mini-map was a welcome change, Modern Warfare needs a standard mini-map to appease the masses and stop other problems from arising.

Why it needs a mini-map

Besides the mini-map, there was one other annoyance in the beta, which came about in large part thanks to the map. Since no player knew where enemies were, unless a UAV was active, camping was at an all-time high. In any given match, nearly half the lobby would be sitting in one building or one corner.

While this is expected in any Call of Duty, it was exacerbated in Modern Warfare due to the map. If players knew where enemies were coming from, the camping wouldn’t have been so extreme. Although, another factor that ties into this is the fact that killstreaks are back.

In past CODs, killstreaks have been based on score. In Modern Warfare, though, kills determine how you earn streaks. This only incentivizes camping further and, paired with a half-functional mini-map, means campers reigned supreme.

To the average or above-average player, camping bogs down gameplay significantly. It makes public lobbies not as enjoyable and will eventually drive these players away. If Infinity Ward wants to help prevent this in some way, there needs to be a standard mini-map in Modern Warfare come launch.

If there’s not, things will only get worse in public lobbies as more players hop online. While it’s expected Infinity Ward will make this change, no one will know until Oct 25.
