On Thursday, Oct. 21, Riot Games announced, in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, that the winners of the 2021 League of Legends World Championship will receive custom-fitted rings. The rings will become a new tradition within LoL esports’ future, and this year’s champions will receive special rings to commemorate the occasion.

“Championship rings are a storied tradition in sports, synonymous with the highest achievements and unmatched excellence,” said Riot Games Global Head of LoL Esports Naz Aletaha. “Since the start of our partnership in 2020, Mercedes-Benz has helped elevate and celebrate the best-of-the-best in LoL Esports, and we are thrilled to bring together our shared love for design and innovation to make a resounding mark on the crowning achievement of our sport.”

Ring details

The championship rings will be presented to the winners of Worlds 2021, during the Trophy Ceremony presented by Mercedes-Benz. The rings are made out of 18 karat white gold and sapphire, and will include a diamond cupped in the hands of the Summoner. Each ring will be personalized for every single member of the winning team, including their summoner name, team tricode and the year. This year’s rings are blue and silver, similar to the Summoner’s Cup, and will feature a few distinct design characteristics to represent the uniqueness of the 2021 season.

The rings were created as a collaboration between designers from Riot Games and the exterior designers at Mercedes-Benz, who are responsible for bringing the iconic Benz look to life.

“The Ring was a challenge that we gladly accepted. In the end, we succeeded in bringing together the identities and design languages of both partners in this unique Ring design,” said Mercedes-Benz Head of Advanced Exterior Design Steffen Köhl. “We are looking forward to the moment when the winners are presented with the ring at the Trophy Ceremony. There is a real piece of Mercedes DNA in it.”

The rings were constructed at GOOD ART HLYWD, a Los Angeles jewelry studio founded by artist Josh Warner in 1990. A statement from Warner on the creation of the rings was provided to Upcomer by Riot Games.

“This was an opportunity to work with the crack team of designers responsible for the Gleneden Wagon, and at the same time make the hero piece acknowledging the champions of League of Legends,” said Warner. “I’m honored we got the call up to work with such literal legends. And there’s nothing better than being pushed to new heights of quality and design.”

A short documentary detailing the process and insights behind the creation of the Championship Rings will be available on YouTube prior to the Worlds 2021 finals.

The Worlds 2021 quarterfinals kick off on Oct. 22 at approximately 8 a.m. ET, with a best-of-five between T1 and Hanwha Life Esports.
