For those looking to finish their Pokédex, here is how to get the Metal Coat item in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. As an item that you need to evolve one specific Pokémon, you can find it in both shops and in other places in Paldea.

Where is Metal Coat in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

To get the Metal Coat quickly, the best method is to just buy it from the Delibird Presents shop in Levincia. In a similar vein to specific evolution stones, you can’t buy them from the store right off the bat. You need to get three Gym badges across Paldea for the item to be added to your shop. With this generation allowing you to go to nearly any gym in any order, choose those three wisely. Afterwards, the Metal Coat should be available in those red and blue stores across Paldea, for around 3,000 currency.

That’s not the only way to get it though, as the in-game auction at Porto Marinada refreshes daily. If they pop up there, you have a chance to acquire it after out-betting some locals. Also, Tera Raids have a ton of loot they can drop after completion. There is a chance that the Metal Coat can be a drop from those raids.

What does Metal Coat do?

The item itself boosts the power of Steel-Type moves for the holder. However, it is more commonly used for evolution. There is one Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet that needs Metal Coat to evolve, and that’s Scyther. So, to fully complete the Pokédex, this item is needed.

To evolve Scyther into Scizor, the Pokémon needs to hold the item while getting traded. That evolves the Bug/Flying type Pokémon to a Bug/Steel, with an item that boosts its Steel-Type moves. There isn’t a way to trade Pokémon without a Nintendo Switch Online membership, so you will need one to complete the Pokédex in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
