There are a few different ways to get around the giant map of Hogwarts Legacy. In the first several hours of the game, you will be forced to walk or sprint everywhere, as you haven’t taken enough classes to acquire other forms of transportation yet. Eventually, you will take your first Flying class and receive your first broom. This is the quickest way to get from place to place, and you can upgrade your broom along the way to make it go even faster. After the broom, though, you’re just sitting around waiting to unlock the Hippogriff mount in Hogwarts Legacy.

If you look at your gear inventory, you will notice a spot that says “Flying Mount.” However, for over half of the game, this option will stay locked because you haven’t yet unlocked the ability to fly on these mounts. Many players have wondered exactly when they will gain access to these mounts. Luckily, we have the exact answer in the guide below.

Unfortunately, you will be waiting for close to a dozen hours before you unlock the Hippogriff and other flying mounts. If you’re someone who has taken their time with Hogwarts Legacy, though, that timeframe could increase. For example, we didn’t unlock the Hippogriff until 27 hours in.

You unlock the Hippogriff by reaching and completing the quest “The High Keep.” This quest is given to you by Natty, and it comes after you’ve traveled with Sebastion Sallow to Feldcroft. During The High Keep, you will go to a castle with Natty to try and get evidence of Rookwood and Harlow’s wrongdoings. Eventually, you will see the Hippogriff, Highwing, that you met in Beasts class with Poppy.

At the end of the quest, you will manage to get Highwing and escape the castle. After that happens, Highwing is yours to keep and other flying mounts that you might have unlocked from pre-order bonuses will be available to use as well. Just go to your gear inventory and then click Flying Mounts to change out what mount you use.
