With esports growing exponentially, colleges and universities have gotten involved the world over. Esports programs are now all but a staple in the top colleges and universities. Many have even gone so far as to construct full gaming arenas on campus. Recently, Australia joined the rapidly-growing industry by offering its first college grant for League of Legends players.

Queensland U wants League players

The Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane is offering five grants of $10,000 to League of Legends players for 2019. QUT is currently the go-to school for professional gaming in Australia. A reason for this may have started in the QUT club established by Michael Trotter and Dylan Poulus in 2016. The two psychology students graduated and are heavily involved in QUT’s booming esports movement. They run the program themselves and also oversee the Queensland University of Technology’s esports Arena, which opened in July.

“Esports at QUT has just exploded—we’re so excited to have these new scholarships. It’s going to be really competitive and completely merit based. Our current team can apply and so can anyone else who’s coming to QUT next year and think they have what it takes to play in the OCS.” – Dylan Poulus

How to get involved

Would-be scholars first need to submit an application by November 16 to QUT. The name of the scholarship is the 2019 QUT Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for Elite Athletes. From there, the applicants undergo a trial by fire. They must battle against one another at the January 5 selection trials at the QUT Esports Arena. Winners earn a place on the QUT five-member 2019 League of Legends OCS team. More information about the program, categorized under ‘elite athlete’ can be found here.
