Kicking off day two!
The Universal Open Season 2 live finals continued with three teams from North America and three from Europe, after Selfless and Double Trouble were eliminated on day one. Competing for a $100K prize pool, it’s the biggest 2v2 tournament in the professional Rocket League scene. Let’s look at day two of three, where the second rounds of the upper and lower bracket were played.

Tournament structure:
- Double elimination
- Best of five for all series except the Grand Final, which is best of seven
- No bracket reset for the Grand Final, but the upper bracket team will have a game win advantage
Upper bracket
Game 1: Cloud9 vs. G2 Esports
The first game of the day might as well have been the grand final, but the two top favourites already faced each other in the second round. Both teams fought hard and required two overtimes and a game five to decide who would move on to the winners’ final. Games went back and forth, but ultimately just one team managed to pull in the win.
In game five, Cloud9 came out on top in a tense 1-0 game, sending G2 to the lower bracket, and C9 to the winners’ final.
Final score: 3-2
Game 2: Girls vs. Team Secret
Girls once more showed why they belong in this tournament. But while they dominated with high-level individual skill, they again had an off-game where things didn’t go according to plan. This caused them a 5-1 loss in game two.
Girls quickly turned it back around, however, and took the win convincingly. Despite the outcome though, Team Secret has proven that the series they play in are almost guaranteed to be exciting.
Girls moves on to play Cloud9 in the winners’ final.
Final score: 3-1
Lower bracket
Game 3: Ghost Gaming vs. G2
Ghost already proved they could be dangerous, but against a team like G2, it was clear they were the underdogs.
It was perhaps a bit surprising, then, that Ghost took game one. And then two. And then three, sweeping one of the tournament favourites. It didn’t come easy for them, since they needed overtime in both game two and three. Nevertheless, G2 looked to have been on the highway to success, but were forced to take an early exit.
Final score: 3-0
Game 4: CompLexity vs. Team Secret
In the final series of the day, Team Secret reminded us that you don’t want to miss anything they play in. Wins went back and forth, all the way to game five, where a single goal made the difference in a 2-1 win for CompLexity.
While Team Secret were sent home, they showed they were more than a fluke. It’s going to be an exciting RLRS with Freakii and Killerno7 in it.
CompLexity moves on to play Ghost Gaming in the next round, the winner of which will be playing in the losers’ final against the loser between Girls and Cloud9.
