Atlanta-based nonprofit organization Cxmmunity has partnered with Twitch to deliver the first-ever Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) esports scholarships while creating a new league. This will help increase minority participation in the gaming industry as well as provide opportunities to college students.
“HBCUs have been a focal point in African American communities for centuries,” states Cxmmunity’s press release. “Cxmmunity plans to carve out their own piece of history by creating the first-ever HBCU esports league.” The overall goal of the scholarship is to provide competitive opportunities for HBCU students to compete within an organized esports league. Supporting the project is Twitch, offering help to HBCUs through Twitch Student.
Out of over two hundred universities in North America, only Morehouse College is the only HBCU that has an esports club associated with TESPA, NACE, and the Collegiate Star League. Unfortunately, this limits the opportunities for many minority students to take part in bigger leagues and expand their skills. Cxmmunity plans to change this with the start of its new project.
Endless possibilities for minority students in esports
“The opportunity to build the first HBCU esports league out of Atlanta is an honor and a privilege,” says Ryan Johnson, Founder of Cxmmunity. “As an HBCU graduate I am beyond excited to bring esports scholarships, internships, and job opportunities to students of color.”
Additionally, these scholarships will encourage students to develop skills around content creation and streaming. Kevin Hoang, Manager of Scholastic Partnerships at Twitch, shared his excitement over the new partnership. “I’m proud to be working alongside Cxmmunity to help minorities receive access to internet and devices to continue their education from home while pursuing gaming and esports.”

The new league will aid students in creating connections with some of the top figures in the industry. Additionally, they’ll have chances to meet with game publishers, professional athletes, and more. Internships and job opportunities also come along with the project, opening doors to endless possibilities.
Other companies working within this project include Axis Replay and GameBRKZ.
The first weekend of HBCU esports streams will take place on August 2nd at 3 PM on Cxmmunity’s Twitch channel. Participating in the stream will include professional athletes, influencers, and world-renowned artists.
