Throughout recent civil unrest, top North American esports teams have pledged $100,000 to The American Civil Liberties Union. They join the rest of the esports community in the fight against racial injustice, highlighting the Black Lives Matter movement.

“We recognize that we all have a role to play,” C9 stated on their Twitter post, “so in advanced of this weekend’s semifinals, we have jointly committed a collective $100,000 contribution to the ACLU.” The ACLU is a nonprofit organization with a mission to defend individual rights in the United States. The most pressing civil liberties issues they face include immigration, religious liberty, LGBTQ rights, and racial justice. Team Liquid, FlyQuest, and TSM also posted the same message on their respective accounts.

The posts have received mixed reactions from fans, as not everyone shares the same sentiments. As a whole, the esports community has been receptive to the organization’s donations. Some fans showed appreciation for the esports teams’ commitment to the cause.

Top teams coming together to fight against racial injustice

The message comes after Chaos Esports Club postponed their CS:GO match against Team Liquid. The team felt that delaying the game would shed light on racial tensions in the US.

Similarly to the protests following the murder of George Floyd, it seems as the esports community is coming together to continue supporting the cause from earlier this year. Ever since the beginning of the nation-wide protests, organizations and content creators raised money to donate to POC-owned nonprofits. Additionally, Riot Games played their part and revealed their plan on increasing diversity in the workplace.

Top figures in all four teams, such as C9 CEO Jack Etienne and FlyQuest General Manager Nick Phan showed their respect for the movement. “Let’s continue to educate ourselves so we can continue to fight for and stand with our Black brothers and sisters.”
