The Kanto Cup is now live in Pokémon GO‘s Battle League, which means you will need a new team of three Pokémon to compete. The Kanto Cup is exactly what it sounds like: a format where you can only use species from the Kanto Region.

While there are plenty of solid choices from Kanto, there are a few that stand out above the rest. Here they are along with what makes them so good.

Hypno

Kanto Cup Pokémon

Hypno is quite bulky and puts out a lot of damage with Confusion as its fast move. There aren’t many Pokémon that resist Psychic-type moves from Kanto Pokémon, so that gives it a nice advantage. It also has access to Shadow Ball as a Charge move, which helps it out against itself and other Psychic and Ghost types.

Snorlax

Pokémon GO Kanto Cup

Snorlax is a fairly common Ultra League pick and makes for a great pick in the Kanto Cup as well. With Lick as a fast move, it gives Hypno a tough time. Body Slam is also a great Charge move that charges up quickly and does decent damage. Snorlax also gets Earthquake, which is great against other popular Kanto Cup picks.

Alolan Muk

Pokémon GO Kanto Cup

Yes, you can use regional variants in the Kanto Cup, which means Alolan Muk is viable. Like Snorlax, this Pokémon is popular in the Ultra League. Make sure to take Snarl as a fast move and Dark Pulse as a charge move. This ensures Muk will have a good matchup against Hypno.

Alolan Marowak

Pokémon GO Kanto Cup

If you’re beginning to notice a trend here, it’s that most of the Kanto Cup top picks are great because they counter Hypno. You should take Fire Spin as a fast move, as it is the most effective, and for charge moves, take Shadow Bone or Shadow Ball along with Bone Club. Be careful of Muk, however, as its Dark-type moves are devastating for Marowak.

Wigglytuff

Pokémon GO Kanto Cup

If you want to throw your opponent a bit of curveball, Wigglytuff is a good option. Charm is one of the best fast moves in Pokémon GO, and it works wonders in PvP battles. Wigglytuff is fairly bulky and does decent enough against other top picks; just watch out for Poison-type moves from the likes of Muk.

While these Pokémon will undoubtedly be popular in the Kanto Cup, there are plenty of others to choose from as well. Try your hand at your favorites and see how it goes!
