It’s been a rough weekend for the Washington Justice of the Overwatch League. First, their star damage player, Corey “Corey” Nigra retired, and now their other damage player, Ethan “Stratus” Yankel, has announced his retirement. Stratus mentions streaming and Valorant in his TwitLonger.

Who is Stratus?

Stratus is a 19-year-old who played the damage role in Overwatch. He played for NRG in Contenders through 2018 and then started for the Washington Justice. Stratus played projectile damage heroes, such as Pharah, Mei, and Genji.

While the Washington Justice didn’t have a great record on the year, Stratus and Corey were both young and talented players. The Justice could have built around them, but both of them had other plans for their futures.

Retirement statement

Stratus posted a TwitLonger to his Twitter account yesterday announcing his retirement and his plans for the future. In it, he specifically mentions that Riot Games’ new first-person shooter, Valorant, has “scratched his competitive itch”. If he does end up pursuing a career in Valorant, he will be the third big-name Overwatch League player to do so. The other two are Jay “Sinatraa” Won and his old Justice teammate, Corey.

Stratus also mentions content creation, such as streaming and making YouTube videos. Content creation is always a popular alternative to professional esports because it offers more freedom and potentially more money when done successfully.

It seems likely that Stratus will attempt to pursue a career in Valorant, given his age and his talent. If he isn’t successful, he will always have his stream and his YouTube channel to fall back on. He does mention that he may even stream Overwatch again in the future.

It’s going to be tough to find a replacement for Stratus, especially with Corey gone too. There are also bound to be more players leaving the competitive Overwatch scene for Valorant. Be sure to stay up to date on all the latest news and stories!
