Since releasing in May of 2015, the Splatoon series has become one of the most popular franchises for the Nintendo Switch with Splatoon 2 selling over 12 million copies. The Nintendo Direct on Feb. 9 confirmed that a third title of the Splatoon series is coming this Summer.`
Splatoon 3’s 2022 release date was teased almost a year ago in a previous showcase. Nintendo also revealed that Salmon Run, a boss rush mode where four players fight all sorts of computer-controlled Salmonoid creatures, is also returning. Salmon Run Next Wave will also include new mechanics, like the ability to throw eggs, as well as new enemies like a giant metal “fish stick.”
Not only will Splatoon 3 be bringing back a previous co-op mode from Splatoon 2, it will also have a single-player campaign mode called “Return of the Mammalian.” The multiplayer modes include old modes like turf war, rainmaker, tower control and splat zones. We’ve had a sneak peak of several new stages as well.

Splatoon 3 will support up to eight players as well as new staples for Inklings and Octolings. As always, the game will be able to be played on the TV, on tabletop and in handheld mode meaning that Switch Lite users can get in on the action as well.
While there may not be a set release date for Splatoon 3, fans have been dissecting each trailer for clues about what new mechanics they’ll see this Summer. The small but vibrant competitive community will get right into hosting tournaments and other events once the third person shooter launches.
