Spirit impress at Road to Rio

With a 14-2 map record at the online tournament, Spirit have gained 1600 RMR points, alongside a $15,000 cash prize. Team Spirit was definitely not the favorite team in line to win the event. CIS region giants Natus Vincere and forZe failed to live up to expectations, making an extremely early exit in the event at the group stage.

Spirit conquered their Group A in the group stage of the event, amassing an impressive 18 points by winning all their matchups and dropping only one map to Nemiga. Coming off of this outstanding performance, the team went straight to the semi-finals of the playoffs. There, Leonid “chopper” Vishnyakov’s men faced the renewed Virtus.pro squad. Spirit would drop their second map in the series after defeating Dzhami “Jame” Ali and co. 2-1, allowing Spirit to advance to the grand finale of the event.

In the final against Winstrike, Abay “Hobbit” Khasenov’s men put up a good initial fight. However, they failed to concentrate in the latter stages of the respective maps. On Dust2, Winstrike got a solid initial 10-5 lead but failed to put up the necessary rounds on the terrorist side. This led to Spirit gaining the early 1-0 lead by winning 16-13.

Nuke then became a tight battle, one which saw Winstrike win the half once more at 8-7. Spirit’s counter-terrorist side, however, was far too strong. Artem “iDISBALANCE” Egorov led the defense, and Spirit comfortably secured the second map 16-11 after stringing nine rounds in a row.
