Has it really been 20 years since Super Smash Bros. made its debut on the Nintendo 64? Today marks a very important milestone that set the bar for fighting games.

Since 1999, the Smash Bros. franchise has seen a whole slew of games on practically every console that followed (GameCube, Wii, 3DS, Wii U). Of course, we just got what is probably the biggest and most jam-packed Smash Bros. game of them all with the release of last month’s Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch.

I for one will never forget the memorable first commercial for Super Smash Bros. that played a lot during the Nintendo 64 era. Things definitely changed for Nintendo fans the day that came out. Sure we had Mario Party, Mario Kart, Mario Golf, and Mario Tennis, among others, but nothing compares to this fighting game. Who doesn’t love playing as their favorite character and duking it out in the many colorful stages?

The Smash Bros. series continues to set itself apart from the vast majority of fighters that have since flooded the console market. Smash Bros. Ultimate, for example, was actually one of the best-selling games this past holiday season and in one week sold an incredible five million copies worldwide.

The game is not going to slow down anytime soon, especially with more fighters to be revealed as DLC characters. Who they will be is anyone’s guess. I find Smash to be a terrific stress reliever. With Smash Bros. Ultimate, the added enjoyment comes from unlocking every single fighter available. You can spend hours playing just to get character unlocks. Now that the Nintendo Switch has been out for a bit, fans are probably wondering what’s next. Only time will tell if Nintendo can top itself.
