Rockstar Games announced, in a blog post on Friday, that the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is “well underway.”
The game will follow up on the astronomical success of GTA V, which was released in 2013. Rockstar has consistently released updates for what is now the second best-selling video game of all time.
“With the unprecedented longevity of GTA V, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,” Rockstar’s blog post reads. “With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.”
While there is no mention of when the game will be released, the end of the blog post suggests that more official details will come “as soon as we are ready.”
The blog post also announced that GTA V is heading to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms on March 15, 2022. This will be the third generation of consoles that the game has been retrofitted for. Some of the features of the game on the new consoles are:
- New graphics modes with up to 4K resolution
- Up to 60 frames per second
- Texture and draw distance upgrades
- HDR options and ray-tracing
- Technical advancements of the latest console generation with faster loading times, immersive 3D audio, platform-specific features like advanced haptic feedback and much more
If you’re concerned about losing your progress as you swap to the new console, don’t worry. Rockstar will allow players to transfer their GTA V Story Mode progress and their GTA Online characters and progression to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch. A separate PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S version of GTA Online will also debut at launch. It will be free for the first three months to PlayStation 5 players.
Finally, there was a small addition to GTA V’s latest content update, The Contract. Short Trips will be accessible from the Jobs menu and players will no longer have to complete the story missions to play through them. More, official versions of Dr. Dre’s music tracks from the update are slated to hit streaming services.
