Fans of the smash-hit game from Psyonix, Rocket League, might be saddened to hear that the game will not be receiving a sequel anytime soon. However, the reasoning behind this developer-driven decision might please many. The director behind the popular vehicular soccer game, Scott Rudi, shared some insight with Gamespot regarding the future of Rocket League. Psyonix intends to continue to focus efforts on supporting Rocket League rather than developing a full-blown sequel. He had this to say concerning the franchise:

“The most valuable thing in our game is our fans. A lot of the stuff we do is focused on keeping them with us. Keeping them interested and all hyped up about our game. We want to provide a really good experience [for players] to have fun with for years to come.”

Rudi stated that games-as-service is the model Psyonix is striving to achieve with Rocket League. This will ensure Rocket League has a longer lifespan on the market. It’s been 3 years since the launch of the title, and the game still hosts somewhere between 6 and 7 million users every month according to the developer’s findings. Rudi continued:

“We want to keep this going. I don’t know what I’d do with Rocket League 2. I’d rather do more to expand the existing Rocket League. It’s doing great, there is a lot ahead of it. So yeah, we have no plans for Rocket League 2.”

Games-As-Service

Games-as-service models have become increasingly popular. The devs have listened to gamers complaints over the years. These grievances have ranged from pricey season passes to a quick turnaround on sequels. Many times, consumers would much rather see ongoing support for their favorite titles, rather than having to pay for a new entry all over again. Because of this, the market landscape has changed. Game makers, like Psyonix, are seeking to constantly support the same games with free updates, game patches, and paid cosmetics for the diehards. In the world of big multiplayer games, frequent entries in a given franchise are becoming a thing of the past.

Rocket League – Defying Gravity with a Car

Rocket League is, perhaps, one of the most addicting games I have ever played. Given the statistics, this seems to be a common sentiment throughout the gaming community. This game offers players the chance to go head-to-head in one-on-one, two-on-two, or three-on-three soccer matches. The catch is that the soccer ball is about twenty times the size of a normal soccer ball and, instead of human avatars, an automobile (of you’re own flashy design) is the method of knocking the ball across a stadium into the opposing team’s goal.

The cars come fully equipped with boosters, jumping mechanics, and fish-tailing features that will equip you with the means of hitting the ball as strategically as possible. As I previously mentioned, the game has received many updates since its launch. The updates include new stadiums, new game modes such as basketball and ice hockey, as well as an array of customizations. Recently, I shared my top esports deals from the Steam Summer Sale for PC gamers which included Rocket League. Additionally, the game can be snagged on the PlayStation’s Mid-Year Sale for a cool $11.99 USD.
