Halo Infinite might be dabbling in the battle royale genre after all, according to the well-informed Windows Central reporter Jez Corden.

Halo Infinite launched in November of 2021 without a battle royale mode. Some thought that to be a mistake, as it is more difficult to find an FPS-game these days without a battle royale than with. The argument that the game would fail to stay relevant without a battle royale mode was common, but 343 Industries launched without one anyway. Now, it seems, a battle royale in some shape or form might be on the horizon after all, although Corden believes it will not be a cookie-cutter battle royale mode.

Halo Infinite battle royale might be different

In his report, Jez Corden wrote about Certain Affinity, a studio that has worked closely together with Microsoft in the past, particularly on Halo games. According to Corden, the Austin-based studio is currently working on a new Infinite mode codenamed “Tatanka,” which bears the same name as the retired wrestler who once won a 40-man battle royale in the WWE (formerly WWF) himself.

While it is unconfirmed that Tatanka means Infinite will be getting a battle royale mode, Corden has been informed that it at least has battle royale elements, including a shrinking arena. Corden himself suspects that it will have “a unique twist or two to differentiate itself from the Call of Duty Warzones and Fortnites of the world.”

According to Forbes, Corden confirmed in an interview that the mode has been in development for two years and that it is potentially a side game in the same vein as Call of Duty’s free Warzone. The target release date is around season 3 or 4 of Halo Infinite and it is meant to tie into the upcoming Forge mode in some way. Most of the information remains vague, however, so fans will simply have to be patient a bit longer for official confirmation that a battle royale is coming to Halo Infinite.
