The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced that registration is now open for the 2020 NHL Gaming World Championship.
This is the third year that the championship is taking place. However, fans and players can expect a larger prize pool this year. The total prize pool is over $150,000 USD.
Three finalists from each region will duke it out against each other. Following this, two finalists from each region will play in the World Final.
The championship series has also taken community feedback into account. Competitors who want to participate in the Online Play-in Bracket Round will play in a best-of-three format. This format gives them a better chance of reaching each Regional Final.

“As seen most recently with our Chel Gaming Challenge during NHL All-Star Weekend in St. Louis, online gaming is a force — and the NHL gaming community is more engaged and enthusiastic than ever,” Chris Golier, the NHL’s vice president of business development, said.
Golier added that the NHL Gaming World Championship fosters interactions with the hockey community. The event can especially reach the younger demographic who are familiar with games.
“The platform continues to attract a number of blue-chip NHL corporate partners who have experienced increased visibility across the global stage,” he explained.
The NHL Gaming World Championship is scheduled to consist of four main events, which include Online Open Play, Online Play-in Bracket, the Regional Finals, and the Finals.
The first round of the tournament is scheduled to take place on March 11. Players can register through the FACEIT website.
Hockey fans and esports supporters can watch all of the action on the NHL’s Twitch channel. The live stream of the Finals will also include promotions and giveaways. Those who want to show their support through social media are encouraged to use the hashtag #NHLGWC.
