During the coronavirus pandemic, all live events sanctioned by Play! Pokémon were canceled. Today, Play! Pokémon announced the Pokémon Players Cup, a new online tournament for Master’s Division players. Here’s what you need to know about the new tournament.
What games does the Pokémon Players Cup include?
The Pokémon Players Cup will feature tournaments for Pokémon: Trading Card Game, Pokkén Tournament DX, and Pokémon Sword and Shield (with the current 2020 VGC rules). The tournament will only be for players eligible to compete in the Master’s Division.
When is the tournament?
The tournament will take place on two separate dates. The first will be sometime in July, and the second will take place in August. Eligible players will compete in a double-elimination tournament in their regions (North America, Europe, Oceania, and Latin America). Top players from July’s tournament will move on to compete in August’s tournament.
How to compete
Pokkén Tournament DX players will be able to register for the tournament without qualifying. Pokémon: Trading Card Game players must qualify with their ranking on the June Leaderboard in Pokémon: Trading Card Game Online. Pokémon Sword and Shield players must qualify by finishing in the top 256 players in their region (128 for Oceania) in the May International Challenge.
To compete in any game, you must have an active Pokémon Club account linked to your Nintendo account, and you must opt into competing in Master’s Division tournaments. If you have not done this, you will be unable to qualify. The account must also be linked to the Pokémon Players Cup game you are hoping to compete in.

Winners from the separate games will be invited to a future International Championships event. This event should help give players something to look forward to during the pandemic.
