Week 11 of the Overwatch League (OWL) is in the books in this strange season, and it wasn’t short of surprises. Here’s a look at some of the things we learned over the week.
Shanghai is a real threat in the Pacific Conference
After getting off to a shaky 1-1 start in the OWL in Week 8, the Shanghai Dragons have yet to lose a single game. They extended their winning streak this week, beating both the Hangzhou Spark and the Chengdu Hunters 3-0. The Hunters were the team that beat them back in Week 8, and the Dragons have taken two matches off of them since then.
Shanghai hasn’t played against any OWL teams outside of China yet due to the coronavirus, but they have looked very strong in their games. Their first real test will come next weekend when they play against the 2-0 Seoul Dynasty. If they continue playing as they have in recent weeks, they could definitely win this match.
Dallas vs. San Francisco
The Dallas Fuel lost to the San Francisco Shock 3-2, but it was the closest match of Week 11. Despite taking the loss, Dallas went toe to toe with last season’s OWL champions all the way to the final point of the last map. While Dallas doesn’t have a pretty record at 2-4, they have shown improvement over the year and their fans should be optimistic about their future.
San Francisco, on the other hand, hasn’t looked nearly as strong as we expected. They have struggled to take wins against weaker OWL teams and even lost to struggling teams like the Los Angeles Valiant. They’ve left the 2019 OWL MVP, Jay “Sinatraa” Won, on the bench and are still trying to find the best roster to field. Nonetheless, they are still 4-2 with plenty of games left to figure it out.
Other takeaways
The other close match this week was the Los Angeles Valiant going against the Los Angeles Gladiators. The Gladiators won 3-2, raising their record to 3-3. Meanwhile the Valiant fell to 2-5. Despite both beating San Francisco, these teams don’t look stellar this year.
Other than that, the Atlanta Reign hard a good performance, the other Chinese teams all seem a cut under the Dragons, and the Paris Eternal couldn’t get it done against the Florida Mayhem. Next week has more fun games in store, so be sure to stay tuned for more OWL news and takeaways!
