Overwatch League Vice President Jon Spector recently confirmed Friday that the league’s plans for 2022 are to start in April. Due to the league’s want to start the 2022 season with Overwatch 2, the plans are for the league to start play with an early version of the game. With the news surrounding the league over the past couple of months towards the end of the season, the possibility of a 2022 season was under scrutiny.
I've seen a lot of speculation regarding a 2022 start date for OWL. We can confirm that our plan is to begin next season in April 2022. We will share more details about 2022 roster construction timelines soon and more info generally on our 2022 season as we get closer to April.

Along with Spector’s tweet confirming the 2022 plans, a league spokesperson has confirmed to Upcomer that the league will try to play next season on an early version of Overwatch 2. A delay in the leagues start date for the new game’s release now seemed likely. But, the Overwatch League is planning to continue with the same start time as before in April. This was first reported by Sean Collins of The Dallas Morning News.
Breaking: the 2022 Overwatch League season plan is to be played on “an early build of Overwatch 2,” a league spokesperson told The Dallas Morning News this morning. That means a form of OW2 will come by April 2022.
There will be more details to come.

The league plans to continue on time
To put it mildly, the league has faced some pushback in recently. All of it stems from the Activision Blizzard controversies and protests. This also led to many companies backing away from the Overwatch League, including Coca-Cola and IBM. After all the strife the league has gone through since COVID-19 forced the cancelation of homestands, it didn’t look promising for 2022. However, Spector came out to deny the rumors of a delayed to start to the league and confirm their plans for 2022.
“The plan right now is for the Overwatch League’s 2022 season to begin on an early build of Overwatch 2,” a spokesperson told Upcomer. “We’ll have more details to share about our 2022 season as we get closer to the planned start date in April of next year.”
Whether this early version of Overwatch 2 will be only accessible to professional players or something available to all has yet to be announced.
