It’s official: Ontario now has its first esports arena. Durham College announced in 2018 that it would begin construction on an esports Gaming Arena for its students. Those plans have officially come to fruition. The arena is intended as the first of a four-phase plan the college has for esports. The following phases are a varsity program, their very own esports club, and fully integrating esports into all of their curricula. The arena is a major part of a much larger renovation, which sees the other half of the E.P. Taylor pub space’s building converted into a student lounge and food service area.

Further details on Ontario’s first esports arena

The arena, set to open today, has 52 different gaming stations in its 3,000 square foot complex. The building offers over 30 competitive esports titles. Durham currently has six varsity teams using the arena to compete across both PC and console games. There are two main sections in the arena. There’s a separate glassed-off section in the arena dedicated to varsity esports gamers and another section for esports club members. There’s also plenty of room for spectators and a large lounge area with screens. These will live-stream varsity and general competitive games. DC’s Lords Esports varsity team is currently competing at the provincial level.

Ontario’s first esports arena offers both club and varsity sections for competitive gaming. Affordable pricing and plenty of spectator space make for a very promising addition to the college.

The arena operates Monday to Friday, from noon to 9 p.m. Durham offers two ways of paying for gaming time in their arena. The first is a three-hour package for $10, the second being a flat rate of $3.75 an hour. This offers access to a single gaming station. More details about Durham’s programs and the arena itself can be found on the esports section of their website.
