According to The Shotcaller, there won’t be an EU LCS Rookie of the Split for the Summer season. This is because members of the press are given the chance to vote for the EU LCS All-Star Team. However, Riot Games would inform all the press that they will not award Rookie of the Split honors this split. Their reasons are that rising top laner Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau and Emil “Larssen” Larsson are not eligible for the award. Bwipo lost his rookie status last season because he would play for Fnatic in the playoffs. Larssen has only played two games for H2K Gaming this split, where a player must play three games for eligibility to win the award.

Risto “SirNukesAlot” Luuri and Matúš “Neon” Jakubčík would be the only players that count as rookies in the current split. However, there isn’t a proper competition between at least three players. Therefore, Riot is deeming it unfit to award any player the Rookie of the Split honor. Now, many people have had a huge problem with this decision. The reason is, fans believe that top laner Bwipo deserves the Rookie of the Split honors by a landslide.

Bwipo: Rookie of the Split?

Fnatic’s resident flex top and bottom lane carry has been excellent throughout the whole Summer. With the meta in such an odd position, he was a huge boon to the team. His ability to play into any odd composition that they would field would push them into the top seed of the EU LCS. We must recognize that he has been playing two different positions for the split, and his team is potentially ending in first place. That is very impressive for his first ever full season on a team.

Speaking of his ability to effect the team, he has the second most kills on Fnatic, next to his teammate Rasmus “Caps” Winther. Also, he has the second most kill participation on his team, next to Caps. It is hard to compare Bwipo to Caps though. This is because Caps is an easy choice for Most Valuable Player for the split. Therefore, Bwipo’s ability to play almost any champion and help support Caps with whatever he may need has been crucial to Fnatic’s success. At the same time, he is also a very good laner on his own, whether it is in the top side or in the bottom lane.

Bwipo has said that he prefers having Fnatic’s star ADC Martin “Rekkles” Larsson on the team. This is so that he has less pressure being put on him, as now he can rely on Rekkles if he himself is having an off game. Without having Rekkles on the starting roster, Bwipo believes that his performance is second to Caps’ in terms of importance. I do think that with traditional marksman champions returning to the meta, having Rekkles on the Rift will make Fnatic a favorite going into the Playoffs.

Why The Decision Makes Sense

It is a hard decision for Riot, canceling the EU LCS Rookie of the Split honors. However, it does make sense that they would not have the award for this season. Not having enough competition for the award would make it way too easy for a certain player to win. Take Bwipo as the example. Yes, he has been playing exemplary over the Summer, but there is literally no other competition. SirNukesAlot and Neon are both stuck on bottom tier teams, and don’t have a chance to make the same impact as Bwipo. Everyone knows that playing with better teammates will make you look great as a result. Again, we may not agree with the decision, but it is a fair one nonetheless.
