Carlos “PHD | NeroTheBoxer” Montalvo Chavez has won the South America West 1 Capcom Pro Tour tournament. This is the fifth stop on this year’s Capcom Pro Tour.

The tournament took place on May 23-24 with 186 players from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.
David “UB | Celfcool” Lara rounded out the top three for the tournament. NeroTheBoxer played a perfect tournament, not losing a single set. Twice during the tournament, he came up against Dylan “UB | Frozen;” once during winners finals — where he sent Frozen to the losers bracket — and once again in grand finals.
NeroTheBoxer wins the tournament
NeroTheBoxer has never been to a Capcom Cup and he hasn’t placed highly in any previous Capcom Pro Tours. Previously, his highest point total in the Pro Tour was 10 points. In the 2019 season, the lowest point total player that qualified for Capcom Cup was with 685 points. Having won the tournament over Frozen in grand finals, NeroTheBoxer will move onto the Capcom Cup Invitational.
The results of the South America West 1 tournament continues an interesting trend in the 2021 Capcom Pro Tour. The winners are often players who have yet to be highlighted in the annual event. In previous years, the tournament series was dominated by players who could afford to travel for tournaments.
Of course, due to restrictions based around the COVID-19 pandemic, this is no longer a feasible strategy. As winning an online tournament is the only requirement to qualify for the Capcom Cup, new talent has begun to surface.
Looking ahead
NeroTheBoxer joins Sim “NL” Gun, Kenryo “Mago” Hayashi, David “MJ_Gama” Gamaliel Pinedo Gomeza, Alan “Nephew” Sun and reigning Capcom Cup champion Derek “iDom” Ruffin as the currently qualified players for next year’s Capcom Cup event.
The next Capcom Pro Tour event will take place from May 29-30 as the tour goes to Brazil for the Brazil 1 tournament.
