Yesterday we got a brand new trailer for the next DLC character coming to Mortal Kombat 11, Rambo. Voiced by Stallone himself, we got to see what the grizzled vet plays like in the game, and it wasn’t what most were expecting. Just like in our Rain breakdown, we will go over each of the moves shown off in the Mortal Kombat 11 Rambo trailer and take what information we can from it.

The trailer starts off with Rambo taking on an unmasked, unscarred Kabal. Right away we see a 3 hit chain that ends in an overhead that causes a knockdown. Then we see what is either a command grab, or some sort of hit grab that has Rambo stab his opponent multiple times in the chest and leaves them standing in a dizzy state. Most command grabs don’t leave the opponent standing, so it is hard to say what kind of move it is exactly. But we can clearly see that it leaves the opponent staggered and ready for a follow-up, in this case a drop kick.

We then get a better picture of the kind of character Rambo is. We see him fire a bow and arrow projectile, very similar to Green Arrow in the Injustice series. Rambo then ducks under a projectile into a sliding tackle, extremely similar to Sub-Zero’s slide. The slide can then be meter burned into a follow up that appears to cause a Krushing Blow on counter hit.

Don’t push it…

Next up Rambo takes on Erron Black in a new costume that is from the first Rambo movie, First Blood. We then see what Rambo’s back throw looks like. Then we find out the second half of Rambo’s playstyle. A large portion of his gameplay seems to be based around traps, very similar to the films. This makes him a cross between Captain Cold from Injustice 2 and Rocket Raccoon from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Rambo lets out what appears to be a low hitting projectile in the form of a zipline trap, and then a second version that leaves the opponent stuck in the air.

The second version doesn’t appear to be a meter burn move, and Rambo immediately cuts the cord and the opponent falls to the ground. It is possible this move has multiple different follow-ups, but we don’t know as of now. Then Rambo does his best Chris Redfield impression by going prone and crawling under a hail of gunfire from Erron Black. This move is obviously designed to go under projectiles but the startup appears to be rather slow. This means the move will mostly be used on prediction rather than reaction. It won’t be helpful against projectiles with fast recovery, like Liu Kang’s fireball. However, against projectiles with long recovery, like Erron Black, Terminator, and Spawn’s meter burn gun specials, it will be very effective.

After that we see what might be another command grab type move from down low that has Rambo slice Erron’s ankles and go into a multi hit move that ends in a Krushing Blow, again, presumably on counter hit. Then we see one of  Rambo’s two pop up moves in the trailer that leads into a juggle and an air grab, which is then meter burned for extra damage. This looks like how Rambo will get most of his damage out of bread and butter combos on the ground. We then see another three hit chain that ends in a knockdown, followed by his forward throw. Which also seems to cause a Krushing Blow on counter hit, a common theme for most of the newer characters in Mortal Kombat 11. However it doesn’t seem that Rambo will be able to get anything after the Krushing Blows that we have seen so far.

Or I’ll give you war you won’t believe…

Next up is Ahnold vs Sly and we see Rambo (in another costume from First Blood) cancel a kick into a roll that gets him on the other side of the Terminator. This is very interesting and it will be fun to see what else Rambo can get off of a roll cancel. Which could easily end up being a very powerful tool depending on the answer to that. Next is what appears to be a wakeup attack that causes an explosion that Rambo rolls out of. Then, like all the other gun characters have had so far, we see Rambo’s big meter burn gun projectile move. Which is, of course, accompanied by Stallone’s classic, guttural yell.

Back to Erron Black, now we see a two hit chain that converts into a back throw that puts Erron on the other side. This will surely be an extremely helpful tool for avoiding corner pressure. Next up comes the Rocket Raccoon part I mentioned before, as Rambo sends out a log trap to whack Erron in the face. If it operates anything like how it does in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, this log could end up being an extremely effective pressure tool. It is important to note though, that this is a meter burn move as well. So it can’t be spammed like Rocket’s at least.

Rambo’s second pop up move is very interesting. He sets C4 on the ground that, if the opponent walks into (or runs in Kabal’s case) it causes a huge pop up that can be converted into big damage. Like a Fatal Blow for instance, which we see next in the trailer referencing the infamous exploding arrow scene from Rambo: First Blood Part II. It is also good to point out that, unlike most Fatal Blows in the game, this leaves Rambo at full screen. Which is great for him to set up his traps and lay down pressure. Lastly we see Rambo’s first Fatality, which is the classic throat rip from Rambo (2008), the last good Rambo movie.

Mortal Kombat 11 Rambo

Let it go!

The Mortal Kombat 11 Rambo DLC will launch on November 17, along with the other two DLC characters, Rain and Mileena. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate will also drop on the same day which provides all the content the game has to offer in one package, as well as being an upgrade for next gen consoles. If you own Mortal Kombat 11 already on Xbox One or PlayStation 4, you will be able to upgrade to Ultimate for free on PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. It shouldn’t be too long now before we see the trailer for the final Kombat Pack 2 character (for now anyway), Mileena.
