Another huge collaboration is in the works, this time between Marvel and League of Legends. The comic giant is planning to publish a graphic novel based on Ashe, a character in the popular video game.

Marvel is planning to release the first graphic novel in May 2019. This would make it the first full-fledged comic based on League of Legends. This collection will actually be the culmination of a series that will be releasing monthly online, starting on Wednesday, December 19. Additionally, C.B. Cebulski, the Editor-in-Chief of Marvel, would state:

Many fans of the Marvel Universe and comics share their interests and passion for storytelling with the gaming community. League of Legends is one of the most well-known games in the industry, and their unique world and extensive roster of rich characters and are a perfect fit for comic books. We’re excited to partner with Riot and help build the League of Legends Universe for fans and players around the world.

League of Legends has always had one of the best lore of any video game today. Each character has its own rich backstory, with the game having its own universe. Many people have always thought that the world of League of Legends could be used to create much more than just a MOBA game. Also, many people were speculating that Riot Games was planning to create an MMO-type of game, due to the beautiful background of their game.

What will it be about?

The first series will tell a tale about Ashe, the Frost Archer. Ashe is one of the first, original champions to grace the Summoner’s Rift in League of Legends. As a result, she is one of the most recognizable. Marvel is calling the new series, “LEAGUE OF LEGENDS: ASHE: WARMOTHER”. The story revolves around Ashe and her struggles as leader of her Iceborn tribe. She also has to deal with her mother’s fanatical expectations of her.

Riot Games writer, Odin Austin Shafer, will be spearheading the writing for this project. Also, Marvel’s Nina Vakueva will be the artist working alongside Shafer. This will be a deeper dive into the universe of League of Legends, concentrating on the frozen lands of the Freljord. Although Riot Games has given fans plenty of lore to enjoy, from short stories to videos, they have never explored the medium of comic books.

The Wide World of Runeterra

The universe of League of Legends is incredibly grand. The world spans from the frozen tundra of Freljord to the sands of the Shuriman Desert. Not to mention the proud, bright nation of Demacia going to war with the dark, brooding Noxians. There are so many stories to tell, that the potential is limitless for this kind of medium to take flight. Graphic novels like this could become incredibly popular with the fanbase of League of Legends. Greg Street, the Head of Creative Development at Riot Games, would say:

We love comics as a way to tell stories because it gives ‘League of Legends’ fans an opportunity to see the world of Runeterra and not just read about it. We see similarities between the League of Legends Universe and the Marvel Universe, as both of them feature an array of characters with compelling and diverse backgrounds. Marvel’s success at developing a world through comics and creating great stories is industry-defining, and we’re thrilled to be working with them to bring our own stories to life.

We should expect more and more amazing content from the League universe in the next few months!
