Week 6 of the League of Legends Pro League 2022 spring split was one of the most intense yet. With many top level teams matching up against each other, the standings were shaken up in big ways. Here are the lessons we learned from Week 6 of the LPL 2022 spring split.

EDG doesn’t need to panic…yet

Week 6 of the LPL 2022 spring split was supposed to be one of celebration for EDG. They were set to receive their championship rings for winning the League of Legends Worlds 2021 championship. However, EDG came out of Week 6 with more disappointment despite of that. Their first match of Week 6 was against Victory 5, who just overtook EDG in the standings and are a legitimate threat to EDG’s chances of repeating as world champions. That is especially true now as V5 dismantled EDG in back-to-back sub-30 minute games which handed EDG their second loss in two weeks.

Ahead of their second match against Top Esports, EDG were given their Worlds 2021 rings with all five of the starting members present. However, when the match started against TES, their top laner Li “Flandre” Xuan-Jun was missing. Instead, EDG fielded their backup Huang “Xiaoxiang”  Xiang in hopes of turning things around. They didn’t.

After a collapse in Game 3, EDG suffered their first 0-2 week of the year. They also have lost three of their last five series. They are still comfortably in the playoff picture, but they need to start turning things around soon or the rings they just received will be their last for a while.

LNG does need to panic

LNG is a lot like EDG. Both teams were at the top of the global power rankings just a couple of weeks ago and both teams are not in the midst of a mid-season struggle. However, it’s LNG who should be starting to panic. After starting off the season 7-0, LNG has lost three straight series. In Week 6 of the LPL 2022 spring split, LNG went up against the two top teams in the LPL: V5 and Weibo Gaming. Although they did manage to take a game off of WBG, they lost to V5 in decisive 2-0 fashion. They came out of Week 6 with their third straight series loss. But it’s the teams they lost to that are the worrying part.

LNG has now lost to Royal Never Give Up, V5 and WBG, all teams they can possibly see again in the playoffs. In fact, against playoff teams, LNG now sits at a poor 2-3 record with one of those wins coming against Rare Atom in Week 1, who since then have improved drastically. As losers of three straight games and against good opponents, the burden is on LNG to turn things around quickly if they want to realistically compete for a LPL title.

V5 emerges as a top team in the LPL and the World

The two big storylines coming out of Week 6 of the LPL 2022 spring split were the fall of EDG and LNG.  One has to look at the common factor contributing to those teams’ current downward trend. The one constant in both of those stories is V5. The Cinderella story of 2022, V5 came into 2022 looking for improvement on their 0-16 LPL 2021 summer split. To see the team now in first place in the entire league is nothing short of a miracle. But looking at their track record, it doesn’t seem like a fluke.

In Week 6 of the LPL 2022 spring split, V5 went up against the former top two teams in the world. They 2-0’d them both. V5’s new roster has familiar names with Hung “Karsa” Hao-Hsuan and Song “Rookie” Eui-jin and they are, of course, a big reason for the team’s success. But looking at the player of the game standings, they have more than just their mid and jungle duo. V5 bot laner Ying “Photic” Qi-Shen actually co-leads all V5 members in player of the game honors. He sits with six, which ties him with Rookie for the most on the team. That number also puts him just one shy for the league lead period.

The scary part about V5 is that the hardest part of their schedule is now behind them. They only have one more team with a current winning record left on their schedule. It is possible that V5 could turn their 0-16 split into a 15-1. That is as long as they keep playing like the best team in the world.
