Riot Games has released patch notes for Legends of Runeterra detailing the game’s draft mode, Expeditions. The Expeditions Preview Patch allows players who signed up for the beta to play an early build of Legends of Runeterra from 8 a.m. Nov. 14 to 8 a.m. Nov. 19.

Picking cards in Expeditions mode is a little different than in traditional draft formats. Players get to choose from three deck archetypes, such as Disruption, which focuses on stunning and recalling your opponents’ cards. Each of the more than 20 archetypes in Legends of Runeterra has a color pair and champion associated with it. From there, the player must choose from three card options that fall under two pick types, synergy and wild. Synergy picks are still random but are based upon previously chosen archetypes. Wild picks can be from any archetype, allowing for decks to include up to three regions, something unique to the Expeditions mode. As players progress, the expedition deck can be upgraded through either new champions or trading. Cards that have already been drafted can be swapped out for other random cards.

Off on an Expedition through Legends of Runeterra

An Expeditions draft ends when the player either wins seven matches or loses two in a row. Once a player gets to the seventh match, it enters a sudden death mode, where one loss ends the Expedition. Once the Expedition has finished, players earn rewards based on the number of wins the player has made. Rewards will always include at least one champion, with higher win rates earning Expedition tokens to draft again. One of the more interesting aspects of Expeditions is that players can use their draft decks twice, earning rewards based on whichever run was better.

Players who participated in the previous patch preview will still keep all the rewards and progress that they have made. Riot does promise at least one reset before Legends of Runeterra releases in 2020. Coins purchased or spent before the reset will be returned to your in-game account.

Those who participate in the preview patch will get a few bonuses. Users will get free wildcards to help build their collection, 8,000 shards (the in-game currency), and an Expeditions Token that allows for one free draft.
