We have already hit the midseason mark for the 2019 LEC Spring Split, and the league is starting to take shape. There are clear contenders, some underdog teams, and some bottom feeders that make up Europe’s best. Last week, G2 Esports suffered their first loss of the season to a red-hot Origen squad, while SK Gaming took down Vitality for a 2-0 week of their own. There is still room for teams to comeback or choke, but for now, let’s look at our power rankings through week five of the LEC.

1. G2 Esports (9-1) [↔️]

2. Origen (6-4) [+2]

3. Team Vitality (7-3) [-1]

4. Schalke 04 (7-3) [-1]

5. Splyce (6-4) [↔️]

6. SK Gaming (5-5) [+2]

7. Fnatic (3-7) [↔️]

8. Misfits Gaming (4-6) [-2]

9. EXCEL Esports (2-8) [↔️]

Searching for Dominance: G2 Esports, Origen

The 18-0 dream is dead for G2 Esports, but their quest for an LEC Spring Split trophy is still well in view. It felt like the European super team was winning each game with almost no effort, so this loss almost seems insignificant for them. Additionally, this loss should only bolster G2 Esports in the long run, as they can now solidify their gameplan moving forward and fix any mistakes they’ve made along the way. They still sport the best roster in the region by far, and shouldn’t have any problems heading into the latter half of the season.

Meanwhile, Origen jumps up two more spots in our power rankings as they’ve caught fire over the past two weeks. They’ve won their past five games, and with matches against struggling Misfits and Fnatic squads, they don’t look like they’ll slow down any time soon. Erlend “Nukeduck” Våtevik Holm has become a beacon of power for Origen, with the second-most kills of any LEC mid laner. His ability to play almost any champion gives Origen so much more flexibility with their compositions, and their bottom lane has also made great strides with their synergy too. This makes them a dangerous team to watch out for in the second half of the Spring Split.

Searching for Stability: Team Vitality, Schalke 04

After another 1-1 weekend for both Team Vitality and Schalke 04, the name of the game for both these teams is consistency. For example, even though they are a top team in the LEC, Vitality is now hovering in the third to fifth-place range for our power rankings. This team needs to keep the pressure up against every team they face. Vitality cannot afford losses against bottom-five teams like SK Gaming. They need to rely on their fast-paced, run-and-gun style of play to overwhelm their opponents. Ultimately, if they drop a game against Fnatic or Splyce next week, you will probably see Team Vitality drop again.

After coming out of the gates blisteringly hot, Schalke 04 has cooled down a good amount over the past few weeks. They are still a top-five team of the LEC, but they’ve faltered in our power rankings for good reason. In week five, they did not look that great against Vitality, but they had a very clean game against Rogue. They’ll need to adjust their gameplan against some of the stronger teams in the league, because playing slow against teams like Vitality, G2 Esports, or Origen may not work.

Searching for Improvement: Splyce, SK Gaming, Fnatic

These three teams are becoming a bit more accustomed to a middle-of-the-pack lifestyle. Each team in this category has a chance to surprise the LEC fans each weekend, so look for them to fluctuate between the third and seventh place in our power rankings. For example, Splyce’s push-for-late-game strategy has been able to take some teams down, like EXCEL Esports. However, if an opponent is able to snowball early, Splyce will probably lose quite easily.

SK Gaming jumped up a couple of spots in our LEC power rankings after an impressive 2-0 week. They were finally able to take down a top-five LEC team in Team Vitality, which shows their improvements as a team. Oskar “Selfmade” Boderek is making his case as not only the Rookie of the Split, but one of the best young junglers of Europe. Although they aren’t going to push too hard for a title in year one, they show plenty of promise for their future.

Lastly, Fnatic has made small improvements over the last week. In their match against Splyce, they were clean and calculated with their engages throughout the match. Unfortunately, their match against SK Gaming was the complete opposite. Patch 9.3 has made life a little bit easier for Martin “Rekkles” Larsson, but until he gets to a point where he can carry, the rest of the team must be able to stand up on their own two feet.

Searching for a Miracle: Misfits Gaming, EXCEL Esports, Rogue

Misfits Gaming has been looking really lost out on the Rift these past few weeks. Yes, their schedule for the past couple of weeks has been tough. However, as a supposed LEC super team, they have to be able to take wins off of the best teams in the region. Losing against Rogue has also killed a lot of their stock as a top-tier team. In response, Misfits have changed up their coaching staff by moving Hussain “Moose” Moosvi back to the head coach position. We will need to see if he can help this team get back on track.

EXCEL Esports has continuously shown signs of greatness in many of their games, but their inexperience always bites them in the behind. After another winless LEC weekend, it looks like their quest for a playoff spot is gone with the wind, for now. Rogue is also in the same boat, even after changing out their top and mid laner. Although they were able to win their first game against Misfits Gaming, there are still too many problems to deal with for them to make a run of it late this season. At least their morale will be getting a much-needed boost, heading into week six.
